Born and raised in Minnesota, John Monson grew up in the Osseo / Maple Grove area. His initial collegiate pursuit was focused on the paramedics program at Mankato State. However, a bad truck accident at a summer job in 1988 forced him out of the paramedic career and he started focusing on business. John started his business career in the radio business as an office manager, and after 5 years left for an opportunity in the healthcare software business. Working his way from financial software trainer to account manager and then project manager, John left the healthcare industry and moved into the growing telecommunication industry, still working on mission critical software systems. After a successful corporate career in the telcom software business, it was time for John to move towards his passion.
In June of 2003, John Monson purchased Bill's Gun Shop & Range in Robbinsdale. At that time, John’s focus was to take a new approach to the good-old-boy’s smoky gun shop, and make it a destination location that welcomes the whole family; starting the venture of Bill’s Gun Shop & Range. He added the Circle Pines MN location in May of 2005 and the Hudson WI location in December 2012. By this point, this new approach to Gun Shops had caught on and John opened the Fargo, ND location in 2015. Due to the need of a quality Gun Shop across the border in MN, John opened a shop in Moorhead, MN at the beginning of 2016.
Outside of professional interests, you will find John hunting and fishing as often as time will allow. He also enjoys spending as much time as possible on the lake with the family.
A lifetime member of the NRA, John’s also a 15 year Certified DNR Firearms Instructor, NRA Certified Instructor, and a Certified Instructor at Bill’s Gun Shop & Range. John is also an active member of the NSSF Range Development Committee where he voluntarily assists other range owners and want-to-be owners, in the best practices of indoor range management.
It’s safe to say John has turned his passion for business, and love of hunting & firearms into a family business.
